Volcano rims, Himalayan passes, rice-terrace valleys

Pick the mountain first. Then pick who walks you up it.

A pre-dawn scramble up Batur, two weeks to Everest Base Camp, a night in a Hmong village above Sapa. Reviews of the treks you can book, with the price, the days and the height of the hardest morning.

Indonesia

Indonesia is a trek up a volcano. The only question is which one.

Batur is the short climb and the crowded one. Rinjani on Lombok is two or three nights on a crater rim above a lake. Agung is the steep night climb on Bali’s sacred mountain. Off the volcanoes, Sumatra’s forest walks go looking for orangutans.

Nepal

Nepal, from a four-day ridge walk to a fortnight under Everest.

Every Himalayan trek here is a teahouse trek: lodges, dal bhat and a porter if you want one. What changes is the number of days and the height of the last morning. Read the rail left to right, shortest to longest.

Fire mountains

Volcano treks: walk up to a crater that is still breathing.

Etna smokes above Catania, Stromboli throws lava at dusk, Batur steams through the sunrise. The most-booked volcano treks on the site, and the lists to go deeper.

Once in a trekking life

Three treks where the walk is only half of it.

Mountain gorillas in the Virunga forest, a pass above the Sacred Valley on the way to Machu Picchu, and the long roof of Africa. Each takes planning that a weekend hike never needs.

Bwindi and the Virungas

Gorilla trekking

Groups walk into the forest at first light with a ranger and trackers, and the search can take an hour or most of the day. When the family is found you get one hour with them, no more, at a distance of several metres. Permits are sold per person per day and are the largest part of the cost.

The back way to the citadel

Treks to Machu Picchu

The classic Inca Trail is permit-only and shuts every February. Salkantay climbs over a glacier pass at around 4,600 metres instead and needs no trail permit, and the quieter Ancascocha and Choquequirao routes go further from the crowds. Every route still ends with a timed entry to the ruins.

The roof of Africa

Kilimanjaro

No ropes, no technical climbing, just altitude. Machame and Lemosho take seven or eight days so the body can adjust, with a midnight start for the final push to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. A licensed guide is required on every climb.

Mount Etna: Trek to 3000m with cable car and 4×4

Reach 3,000 meters on Mount Etna with Etna Guides. Ride the cable car and 4x4, then hike across black volcanic sand to the Barbagallo crater, old lava flows, a lava channel, and an effusive vent from the 2002 eruption. Guides including Antonio, Giuseppe, Michele, and Dario lead groups in English, French, or Italian.

Vietnam

Vietnam treks downhill first, through Sapa’s rice terraces.

The classic Sapa day drops into the Muong Hoa valley past Lao Chai and Ta Van, with a Hmong or Dao guide from the villages. Stay the night in a homestay and the second day goes further up the valley. Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina, is the hard option.

Permits and timing

Five treks you cannot just turn up for.

Most trail days can be booked the week before. These five run on permits, park rules, flights and seasons that will not bend to your dates.

  1. 01Everest Base Camp Trek – 14 DaysLukla flights are tied to the trek dates and cancel in cloud. Spring and autumn fill the lodges first; leave a spare day at each end.
  2. 023 Days gorilla trekking Safari tour in UgandaPermits are sold per person per day, US$800 in Uganda and US$1,500 in Rwanda, and each habituated family takes eight visitors a day.
  3. 03Machu Picchu: 5-Day Salkantay Trek with Panoramic TrainEntry to the ruins is a timed ticket with a daily cap, and the classic Inca Trail closes every February.
  4. 048-Day Small-group Lemosho Kilimanjaro Summit TrekkingEvery climb needs a licensed guide by park rule, and park fees are a large share of the price. Fewer than six days leaves little time to acclimatise.
  5. 05Mount Rinjani Trek 3D-2N To Summit – Lake – HotspringThe national park closes the climbing routes in the wet season, usually January to March. Book the dry months.
What a trek costs

A trek costs a morning’s wage or a month’s. Here is where each sits.

Every trek on the site grouped by price per person. Most of the difference is days, permits and porters.

Under $50

Sunrise volcano climbs, Sapa valley days and the gorge walks you finish by lunch.

$50–300

Overnight summits, two- and three-day homestay treks and the full-day Etna craters.

$300 and up

Two weeks in the Himalaya, Kilimanjaro, gorilla permits and the Patagonian glaciers.

June to September

When the monsoon closes in on the Himalaya, trek the dry side of the world.

Summer rain puts Nepal’s high trails in cloud and leeches and grounds the Lukla flights. The same months are the dry season in the Peruvian Andes, the summit season in the High Atlas, the long dry window on Kilimanjaro and the cool hour on Etna’s upper slopes.
